Let’s admit it. Apple has us hanging on the iPhone 8 with strategically dropped leaks and rumors. The 10th Anniversary edition of the iPhone has some promising new features and hardware additions, such as screens on the edges, Touch ID integration into the display, and a facial mapping sensor in the selfie cam, not to mention the usual hardware upgrades in respect to the camera, processor, and battery. In this article we are going to bring together all the latest rumors, leaks, and announcements related to the iPhone 8.
Let’s start with the screen. This is one of the most wanted, and frankly, most needed boosts that Apple has lacked over the years. The iPhone 8 screen is going to cover almost the whole front of the phone, and have edge screens, much like the Samsung Galaxy S8. The screen is expected to be a 4K screen. Also a patent was discovered that shows a way that Apple could transfer Touch ID images through the screen, without distortion, and shows the Touch ID button will be integrated into the screen, along with the selfie cam and other hardware pieces.
There is also expected to be multiple screen sizes, ranging from 4.7 inches, to 5.8 inches. Apple has been experimenting with OLED and AMOLED screens, and the higher end editions might very well have one of those technologies. The iPhone 8 will also have something that has not been in existence in the Apple world since the iPhone 4S – A glass back. Why? Think wireless charging (In the Hardware section).
Apple is expected to release several versions of the iPhone, the usual screen size and storage space versions (up to 512GB!). Now for a big question. What about the iPhone 7S? Don’t worry. Apple is planning to release the iPhone 7S AND the iPhone 8. Rumors say that they were going to release the iPhone 7S and iPhone 8 at the same time, but other sources say that, due to manufacturing shortages, they will release the iPhone 7S first, then release the 8.
UPDATE: Some sources say that Apple will only release the iPhone 8 with a black front, to make it look pretty, I guess.
Facial Mapping Sensor:
The iPhone 8 will boast a comprehensive facial mapping sensor. Sources say that Apple will use it to add facial recognition & unlock, Snapchat-like filters in the native camera app, and many more useful features.
The release of the PRODUCT RED iPhone 7 started speculation that Apple will add colors to the iPhone 8, much like the iPhone 5c of 2012. Colors expected include the normal Gold, Silver, Black, and Rose Gold, also Red, blue, white, yellow, pink, and possibly green. It will be refreshing to see Apple break the trend of dull, metallic style smartphones.
Apple is very predictable in this area. Along with the normal camera, processor, battery, and GPU updates, comes a facial mapping sensor, and most likely another coprocessor in the new Apple A11 processor, which puts it at 3 separate processor components. The A11 main processor, the M11 motion coprocessor, and the facial mapping data processor (presumably the F11). Also, leaks show that the iPhone 8 will have wireless charging capability, hence the glass back. The camera is expected to be 16MP camera, up from the former 12MP, and will be able to record 60FPS 4K, and 240FPS 1080HD. The battery would be up to 3000mAh, up from 1960 on the iPhone 7. The processor will be boosted from a quad-core 2.34GHz to a 3.1GHz octa-core. The storage may me upped to 512GB.
iOS 11 is expected to have the normal bug fixes, security boosts, and optimization improvements. The camera may have snapchat-like filters included. Apple has released a preview for iOS 11. Most of the big chang are for the iPad, but the iPhone improvements include a Control Center UI update, Apple Store redesign, Sending payments in iMessage, and send gift card to people in iMessage.
Release Date and Price:
The iPhone 7S is expected to release in the normal date range; September-November. The iPhone 8 is reported to be released in December, but some sources say it could even be April 2018. The price is expected to be starting at $800, and could range all the way to $1200.
If the iPhone 8 is all it is rumored to be, it would be worth the hit on the wallet. Check back frequently for any updates. As always, we bring you the ABSOLUTE latest information, rumors and leaks.
